Up for sale is a unique Japanese bass – the Burny LSB-65. Combining Gibson’s angular shapes with a beefy humbucker in the classic StingRay position, this axe feels like a mashup of a Les Paul and a Music Man. It dates back to around 1996.
Even though it looks quite compact, the LSB-65 is actually a full-scale bass with 21 frets. The thick basswood body has those sharp edges, but it also features a few contours that seriously boost ergonomics. The nut width is 42 mm, and the neck itself is on the slimmer side (though not quite as skinny as a Jazz Bass). Weighing in at around 3.7 kg with great overall balance, it won’t kill your shoulder during long sets on a strap.
As with most of their basses from this era, Fernandes (the parent company of Burny) loaded it with high-quality Gotoh hardware, which still looks and works like new today. The frets are in great shape, the truss rod is fully functional, and it has super low action (1.6 - 1.9 mm at the 12th fret). Visually, it’s in decent condition, though you’ll find a few paint chips on the corners and some buckle rash on the back of the body.
Tone-wise, the LSB-65 leans heavily into vintage territory – it’s got plenty of low-end and a honky, punchy midrange, with a rolled-off top end. It responds beautifully to your articulation and right-hand positioning; even a slight shift towards the bridge is immediately reflected in the sound.
Character-wise, it really reminds me of Joe Dart’s signature Music Man… just with a completely different aesthetic.
You’re welcome to test it out in Poznań (Poland!), or I can ship it safely.
